Prohibited Materials Analysis

With manufacturers moving to Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and lead-free, it is now more important than ever to make sure you are using the right materials. Because of concerns about the formation of tin whiskers, space programs must be sure that parts do not contain pure tin. But because of RoHS, the availability of parts with lead-tin termination finishes is continually decreasing.

Comtech TCS Space & Component Technology conducts in-house x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis to ensure that all high-reliability space components do not contain prohibited materials, such as cadmium, zinc, and pure tin, which reduce device life or cause latent failures, intermittent failures, or total system failure. We use a Fischerscope XAN 150 high-resolution XRF spectrometer with a silicon drift detector, far exceeding the requirements of the new MIL-STD-1580 Requirement 9 and JESD213, both implemented in 2010. For pure tin analysis, Comtech TCS uses a 97Sn/3Pb standard acquired directly from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at the beginning of each work shift. Comtech TCS performs prohibited materials analysis in accordance with either the military or industry standards, or company-specific requirements as appropriate.
