Encryption Encryption can provide two benefits when used with SSD technology. The first, obvious benefit is that the data is protected from unauthorized users. A password or the proper key is needed to access the data. The second, less obvious benefit is that encryption can improve the reliability of SSDs. Flash memory can suffer from “read disturb” effects where certain data patterns can disturb the charge on the floating gate causing loss of data. Encryption effectively randomizes data, making disturb patterns much less likely. TCS Galatea drives provide AES-128 Encryption with automatic key management. The key is generated and stored by the SSD controller automatically. This key can be quickly deleted, rendering the data unreadable if necessary. Galatea Secure also implements the Security commands in the ATA-8 specification which can be used to set password protection on the drive which protects the data even if the drive is moved to a different system.
