Comtech Telecommunications Receives $2 Million Contract for Second Phase of Caribbean Project

- Digital Over-the-Horizon System for Communications Between Islands
- Part of Refurbishment/Replacement of Existing System

MELVILLE, NY, December 23, 1999 - Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq: CMTL) today announced that it has received a follow-on contract valued at approximately $2.5 million to expand a new digital over-the-horizon microwave system that is being installed to facilitate the inter-island communications of a Caribbean nation.

This new contract is part of the second phase of the project and was awarded by Nortel Networks Corporation. In September, Comtech Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications, received an initial Nortel contract valued at more than $1 million to provide equipment to be used in linking two points in the new system. This second phase will create two additional communications links. The equipment being provided by Comtech Systems includes 2GHz quadruple diversity troposcatter radios equipped with advanced Model S-575 digital adaptive troposcatter modems. Comtech will also supply solid-state high-power amplifiers, link quality monitoring equipment, and the company's unique automatic transmitter power control equipment, which prevents interference with other communications systems.

Fred Kornberg, president and chief executive officer of Comtech Telecommunications, said Comtech is the only U.S. company capable of supplying all the equipment called for under the Nortel contracts.

"Our success in winning and fulfilling these contracts is fresh evidence of Comtech's leadership in the over-the-horizon microwave telecommunications field," Mr. Kornberg said. "We are in an excellent position to get more business of this kind as other aging telecommunications systems around the world require refurbishment and replacement."

Nortel Networks, based in Canada, is a leading supplier of telephony, IP- based data, wireline and wireless networking.

Comtech Telecommunications, Corp., through its operating units, is a broad-based supplier of mobile data communications transceivers and services, state-of-the-art solid state high power RF microwave amplifiers and high-technology satellite and over-the-horizon microwave telecommunication products and systems for commercial and government applications.
